Periods should never be a barrier to participation

Our Bloody Big Survey confirmed the lack of awareness and education about menstruation. Starting from as young as 8 years old, more than 1.8 billion people worldwide get their periods every month, typically for 30+ years! It’s time to normalise periods. We want to empower communities to access tools, resources and reliable information so that they can support their mums, girls, aunties, sisters, friends and anyone else in their life who menstruates.

Education empowers individuals, reduces the shame and stigma and creates better health outcomes. When people understand their menstrual cycle they can manage their period with confidence and dignity. Ultimately, menstrual education is key to achieving menstrual equity.

We are excited to announce our partnership with Share the Dignity to address period poverty and promote menstrual equity. Share the Dignity’s 2024 Bloody Big Survey revealed that 65% of people struggle to afford period products – an alarming statistic. The survey also highlighted the shame, stigma, and lack of understanding surrounding menstruation.

As a Council, we continuously seek opportunities to improve community health. When Share the Dignity invited us to join their Council Cares initiative, we eagerly partnered with them. As part of this initiative we encourage you to increase your understanding around menstruation whether you are a father, brother, coach, workplace first time menstruator or anyone else! By increasing awareness around menstruation we can work towards ending period poverty.

We will review our current efforts and explore additional measures to enhance our impact. By the next survey in 2027, we aim to significantly improve our community’s understanding and management of menstruation. It’s time to normalise periods and ensure everyone has access to period products now and into the future.
